Ive also heard this. But if it's because we call ourselves African Americans and aren't really from Africa then it's not our fault. I don't refer to myself as an african american because Im not from Africa and have never been there.....neither have my parents or grandparents. So is it really our fault? Nope, it's society's fault.

I've been told that this is a lot like Japanese Americans being regarded as persons of lower caste by people from Japan. Or, like Indo-Americans being called ABCDs (American Born Confused deshi) by citizens of the old country.
African Americans were brought to this continent against their will centuries ago, but over a few generations, they have developed a culture and mentality of their own - like most diaspora or migrant groups.
About Africans: they too are so diverse from one end of the continent to the other. They have also had ethnic conflicts out there, along with several other problems - like poverty, famine or AIDS.
Hence, African Americans may be just another group of foreigners tor them, in some ways.

I've never heard that much growing up, but I have heard a lot of African AMERICANS & their negative perspectives towards Africans. For some reason many African Americans believe Africans don't pay taxes! I wonder why. Can't we ALL just get along???

I've heard that from a few African people I knew growing up. They said they didnt feel black people from the Caribbean or African American's were "real" black people because we've been mixed up so much along the way. However, that's the opinion of a few. They cannot speak for the culture on a whole.

It's funny, but I knew an African man who said he couldn't stand blacks because some of them called themselves african american and they didn't have an african bone in their body.
