for example,

Jeanne (O.S)
(breathing intensely)
Hey, I'm finally here...sorry for taking longer than expected

David ( O.S)
'bout time Jeanne. Almost left you back there.

when using O.S after characters names what does it mean excatly? and how often do you have to use it? I know it's a type of character extension thing but I'm not so sure how to use it excatly...

it means "off screen", as in "they can be heard but not seen on camera"

v.o. stands for "voice over"

O.S means Off Screen. In other words your character is still in the scene but cannot be seen in the shot.
V.O is Voice over, and is totally different, it means that someone is talking about the scene, either the narrator or an actor (they are not part of the scene)
