There are a whole bunch of answers as to why it can pause. The examples listed above are all likely and valid, but a pause in your period can be from just about anything.
The answer I got when I asked that question was that hormone levels are largely to blame. Stress, weight gain or loss, etc all influence the amount of hormones in your system at any given time. If the hormones are off, your period very well might pause until you get things straightened out.

Missing a period with a negative pregnancy test is one of the most common complaints on WebMD's infertility message boards.

Your regular menstrual period comes usually in response to ovulation, and there are two circumstances that usually precede missing a period: You either ovulated or you did not.

If you know for sure that you ovulated and you are now 15+ dpo (days post-ovulation) without a period, then the home pregnancy test is usually positive and you are pregnant. You may want to get a blood test in your doctor's office to confirm your negative test. If the home pregnancy test is repeatedly negative after you missed your period, then:

- You tested too early (less than 15 dpo)

- You ovulated later than you think

- Implantation happened late, or

- You did not ovulate in the preceding cycle

Besides being pregnant, the No. 1 reason for missing your period without pregnancy is not ovulating (anovulation).

That's why it's essential for every woman who is trying to conceive to chart her fertility and to know precisely each cycle if ovulation happened or not. Knowing if and when you ovulated usually removes any confusion you may have if your period didn't come.

Charting your fertility helps you find out if you ovulated. If you know you ovulated and your period hasn't come 15+ dpo, there could be only one reason: You are pregnant.

If you know that you did not ovulate, you can often expect your period not to come and you are prepared. You can chart your fertility and confirm ovulation by:

a. Doing a basal body temperature chart
b. Checking cervical mucus and other fertility signs
c. Doing ultrasounds
d. Checking progesterone
e. Doing an endometrial biopsy

There are many reasons you may have a "pause" in your period.

Stress is a big factor. If you are experiencing an unusual amount of stress, it can cause you to be irregular. Also, your diet and exercise habits may cause a difference too.

If you go more than 8 weeks without a period, and you aren't pregnant, you should consult your doctor.

Stress, change in diet or home life, age just to name a few. Any number of things can put a pause on your period. My guess is, if you are late, that you are under a lot of stress or your body is just responding to getting older. Relax, if it continues see your doctor.

If you are very underweight or hyperactive (like with sports and exercise) your period will stop. Mine will skip a month every once in a while for no apparent reason... poor nutrition might also be a factor in irregularity.

if you aren't eating well
if you are a lot of pressure
if you haven't been sleeping enough
and if went on a diet where you are not getting enough to eat
sometimes it just stops for a few months for no reason
but the best advise is to see your doctor
he will tell you the reason

Yeah...depo shot...the new birth control pill that allows you only 4 periods a year, excessive exercise, anorexia/very poor nutrition...

If you are not having a period and are unsure why, see your doctor...

Yes, some medical conditions can result in missed periods. It's best to see your OB/GYN if you've missed periods without knowing why.
