well it depends on how long it takes for your cell or palm pilot to charge, I used to have a cell that I charged all night but now I don't, because of the battery if you charge it too much or too long you will mess the battery up soo bad it won't work at all (of course the not working at all takes time) This isn't just a guess a guy from my cell phone store told me.

As long as you are using a surge protector(preferably one by "BELKIN") you won't have to worry about an electrical surge frying the batteries or units themselves.
