Because they see you as servants who have no other choice but thelow paying menial jobs they have. perhaps its time that retail workers just quit 'en mass' in one city or all took a sick day at the same time. Why not organize one for boxing day where you work?

Great question! I feel that it is not only a problem for retail employees but for many other employees too.
I work in the home building industry in a corporate office environment and I ask myself the same question you asked, only I am asking it all year long. It seems that no matter where you go, the hardest working employees are not appreciated and the ones that are not hard working always come out ahead.
I wish I had an answer, but it looks more like a comment. Sorry and I hope things get better for you in 2007!
Happy Holidays

Sorry to hear that., I did not think it was like that at all. Working in retail at this time of year is hectic, and you guys need more cheer than the rest of us because the grumpiness (just like cheer), rubs off on people. If I were able to spend during Christmas ('m broke), I'd be the perfect customer to cheer ya'll up. But unfortunately, the big spenders don't have my heart.

because in retail there is an extremely high rate of employee turnover. you said you've worked for several employers the past few years, meaning you're one of the statistics.
employers reward hardwork throughout the year and show appreciation towards loyalty with bonuses, not just because the holidays are stressful.

Get out of retail ! I worked it for years until I realized it was the reason my life was ruled by holidays & I started hating holidays.
think about a job where you dont have to deel w/the public face to face.
Good Luck Hope the New Year will bring you Peace & Joy !

I hear ya! I worked retail and in the food industry during the holidays and was treated crummy! The customers are usually crabby and cheap. The bosses/companies are cheap and it just sucks. A thankless industry that's for sure. I clean houses now and not all,but most will give me a candle or some other thing they can regift to me. I'm like Yeah.... you're welcome for busting my butt for you all year ya cheap jerk!

If it have been me, i could pass and take an incredible bottle of wine for the host/hostess of the occasion. i could be as great as accessible for extra or less half-hour and then head out to a exciting place with acquaintances to recover from the crappy time I had on the form. i could desire doing this could advise people observed that i'm attempting to make a reliable impression even between people who do unlike me, and if it did no longer paintings, i could a minimum of comprehend I made an attempt even however they are not. reliable success!

well the ones that don't work spend all their time telling every one how hard they work. then when a worker shoots them a dirty look for bludging, then they say we are just grumpy
