If you are going to south london, there is a very direct route down the A102 (m). Add another 45 minutes to one and a half hours depending on whether you need to cross london to get to the west. If you are near the outskirts, it is probably quicker to take the M25 exit from the M11 near stanstead and go round the outside - much will depend on what time you leave.
The M11 is a two lane motorway - be careful, it's a bit notorious for drivers losing patience and bunching up too close to one another in the outside lane - on a trip three weeks ago I witnessed THREE pile ups within forty miles - take care and you will be fine!

About 50 miles as the crow flies but you can add at least 15 miles to go by road. which I wouldn't recommend
