Dickens and Poe both portrayed the underside of cultural life. They were contemporaries and even met during Charles Dickens' tour of America. An example of Dickens' correspondence with Poe:

Dickens was fascinated with Poe's mind. Dickens was not a supernaturalist, as was Poe. For a detailed comparison of their work see:

Another difference besides Dickens more naturalist mind set, was the obvious fact that Dickens was English and Poe was American.

Just a quick aside, I once went through Poe's house in Baltimore on Amity Street. It was Halloween. I was the only person in the museum, except for the man at the desk on the first level. I had the strangest experience that Poe still somehow inhabited the house. That he was there and still mourned for his wife who had died there of consumption and for himself and his tragic and mysterious death in Baltimore some few years later. I think Dickens recorded life as he found it, but he was totally incapable of the depth that Poe could not escape.

PS: About Dickens' wife, I'm confused. Dickens and his wife Catherine did separtae and I guess you were asking about the fate of the kids after the separation. Is that right? If so, take a look at:

Edgar Allan Poe was a gothic writer, who died in Virginia In 1840 and was thoroughly famous for his tales about horror and suspense (Murders in the Rue Morgue, tell-tale Heart, Black Cat, A descent into the Maleström and the Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pin, to name a few (I've read all of them ^ - ^)) while Charles Dickens was an English writer whose utmost concern (and therefore theme for his work) surrounds Social Issues at the time as well as the suffering of workers during the Industrial Revolution. I can't tell you for sure in what one reassembles another, although both received criticism from many readers who listed faults such as sentimentality, unrealistic events and grotesque characters.

I didn't know Edgar Allan Poe had kids, even though he was married to a 14 year old woman.

One was a woman. One was a man. One was noted for not writing good poetry. The other was noted for exceptional poetry.

What do you mean by "how many kinds?"
