Royal Palace is great, the Prado museum is famous and worth a look (it's free on Sundays!), and the Plaza del Sol is filled with charming shops and restaurants. Also plenty of good places to sleep and have fun near the Plaza del Sol.

Kamman is right: Museo del Prado, Royal Palace, Plaza de Sol, were you must eat pulgas (small sandwiches) or tapas. Also, the Street Princesa is a very good shopping area. And go for a walk in the Parque del Retiro, were you can also take a boat. At night, some people go there to make spontaneuos meetings and play the drums.
Have a nice trip!

I've been to Spain...you have to go to a clothing store named BERSHKA (guys and girls clothing) it's right in Madrid. They have the best fitting jeans ever and they are reasonably priced. But FYI....if you like them buy a lot because I haven't found them anywhere else except for in Spain.
