Well, after WWI, a treaty was signed by France, Britain and US. It was called the Treaty of Versailles and it's purpose was to bring Germany to its knees so that it could never rise again to power. You see, according to the Treaty, Germany was to fully blame for the start of WWI. As a result, Germany was force to pay the damages caused by the war and this amounted to an incredible amount of money.

In order to pay the damages, Germany was forced to print excessive amounts of money and this led to an inflation. The inflation also led to a terrible depression.

As you can easily see, the Germans hated the Treaty of Versailles and what it did to them. So, one of the things Hitler said he would do is tear up this Treaty (literally) and undo it's affects. He brought Germany out of it's depression and provided employment for everyone. While he was at it, he used his power of speech to convince men to march into Poland - all of course to bring back land which originally belonged to Germany. And as soon as Hitler's army set foot into Poland, WWII started.

But in a nutshell, Hitler promised to gain back Germany's pride that had been taken away by the Treaty of Versailles.

Hitler's Promises To Germany

Hitler promised to abrogate the Treaty of Versailles. The treaty obliged Germany to pay enormous reparations after WW1. This was way beyond Germany's means to pay. This resulted in economic crisis, recession, unemployment, currency devaluation. Social programmes cannot be implemented due to lack of funds, as most of the money went to cover the payment of the massive debt. Most Germans lived at or below poverty level.

Re-taking of the Rhineland, Alsace-Loraine and Danzig (large tract of territories lost after Germany's defeat in WW1).

Re-building of Germany's military. The Treaty of Versaille's imposed severe size limitations on Germany's military (number of battleships, warplanes, troops, tanks, etc.) to prevent it from becoming a military power again. Hitler initiated Germany's extensive re-armament program, making the military what it was shortly before WW2. Re-militarization also created employment opportunities in armament industries, and availability of military conscription.

All of the above measures are meant to fulfill Hitler's promise of making Germany the greatest nation in Europe.
