mmhhh...... heaps to eat in Kuala LUmpur,
- Try the hawker street food around Star Hill area, I think somewhere opposite BB Plaza, and right by KFC, there is a stretch of hawker places, delicious food, like Portuguese BBQ (fish, squid, 'la la' or something like a clam), DELICIOUS. Try the Prawn Noodles, hainanese chicken rice, the fried keow teow, the bak kut teh, mmhhh.... yes, curry laksa, Cha Siu rice (pork rice, YUMMY), the mixed rice, oh, the satay and the BBQ chicken wings.... Rojak, etc etc. Trust me, you will go crazy with the food selection there.
FOr restaurant food, try the Indian banana leaf meal, some Chinese restaurants serve incredibly delicious food (like the ones in Bangsar), oh, the CHakri palace (or something like that) serve the most delicious Thai food. If you are into Malay type of food, then don't go any further than the street side stalls selling nasi lemak and chicken rendang, the sambal, oh, 7th heaven mate! OR, go to the Malay food stalls (you can tell it is Malay because 90%) of people eating there are Malay), and try some of their delicious dishes, like the telur bistik, ayam merah, ayam kicap, tom yum, yummy... And odn't forget the 'ramlee burger', quite different from teh western 'burger' idea, but delicious. Asked one with 'egg' wrapped around the meat.
This is not all, but I think a good idea of what a food heaven malaysia is.

Malaysia is a melting pot of three cultures (India, China and Malay). Each culture offers it own variety of dishes so you won't have a problem finding something interesting to eat.
Having been to Malaysia numerous times in the past, my staple food was always Nasi Goreng and Chicken Satay. It usually came with a chicken wing deep fried and an egg cooked over easy.
Take a look at this site as it will give you an idea of the different types of food that you will encounter in Malaysia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_cuisine

why not get your friend to sample malaysian very own Nasi Campur..Nasi Campur means Plain rice which comes along with typical local dishes..be it the Malay style or Indian 'Banana Leaf' style...skip the Chinese version of Nasi Campur as i'm sure your Chef friend is already expert on this...

You own-self as a local does not know where to eat??? How embarrassing... Don't you read the local daily?? The paper do recommend local food and the place as well. Shame on you did not read news paper.
The best is bring your friend to hawker stall. Lot's of choice and variety to choose.
Not only 5 star hotels or posh restaurant serve good food. The hawker does as well and 90% of Malaysian grow up eating at the hawker.
