"Corporation - noun. An ingenious device for obtaining individual profit, without individual responsibility."

Companies don't care, cause companies don't have to. If you don't buy their killer sticks some other poor fool will.

My general guess is that it's a matter of consent. Theoretically speaking (we as a state stand against the choice to die as an inherent part of choice to live), but theoretically speaking, it wouldn't be a crime for you to administer poison to someone if they consented to be fed poison. so when an individual goes out an buys a packet of cigarettes, it's not a crime because your pack says that it's poison. It is however a crime to not declare harmful contents in food products. why companies are not prosecuted for the crime of feeding their consumers poisonous (may i tone that word down a little?), harmful ingredients is because consumers who are eventually aware don't draw up a legal challenge. previously there was of course very daunting expenditure involved with dragging a company to court for your consumer rights. but things are now considerably simpler with a multi layered consumer protection system slowly being put in place. of course, the system will work and improve only if we use it.

companies don't make anyone do anything. its no different than if fast food places were held responsible if you have a heart attack from their fatty food. its our choice. they have been crossing the line however about marketing cigarettes to minors. they try to make it cool, and make them think its OK, and everyone is doing it. they don't show the people in hospitals, fighting for every breath because that's not cool. we , in the end, are responsible for ourselves. the sooner we accept that responsibility, the sooner we can get on to making good informed choices.

Because people voluntarily buy cigarettes. Not very many people voluntarily put rat poison in their Pepsi.

Because if you administered poison to someone, it would be without their permission. If you make the CHOICE to smoke, you are poisoning yourself.

If you gave someone poison against their will that resulted in their death, you would be a murderer. If someone chooses to ingest poison for years and years, and that results in their death, it is a different thing.
