I always buy a few "emergency gift" for situations in which someone unexpectedly gives me a gift. That way I can always have something on hand to give them in return. This sounds like just the occassion. Here are a few inexpensive things I keep around --- one of them might be a good idea for you:

1. Scented candles - I usually buy the small ohnes. You can three different scents for 3 dollars total and then put them in a gift bag
2. Christmas Ornaments - Any dollar store or craft store in your town will have inexpensive christmas ornaments for under $5. They usually look more expensive than they are and make great gifts
3. Gift certificates - Gift certificate books from movie theaters are great gifts -- for $10 you can buy someone a trip to the movies and then they can use it whenever they want
4. Potpourri - Any dollar store or retail store will have bags of scented potpourri for sale in nice clear bags with beautoful bows on them (usually $3 - $5) these make excellent gifts especially if you include a small basket or small glass bowl with it (usually another $5-$7)
5. Coasters - I find these tobe unique gifts because not many people give coasters as gifts -- Any Big Lots will have cool little coaster sets for under $10. Everyone I have ever given coaster sets has loved them. They have glass one, mosaic ones, and colored ones
6. Baked goods - You can always throw some cookies in the oven and put them in a nice chirstmas tin from the dollar store. They don't have to be homemade...you can always get the pre-made cookie dough that you stick in the over -- takes 12-15 minutes
7. Umbrellas - I live in a rainy climate so these are always good gifts. If you live in rainy climate this may be a good idea for you too--Those of us who live where it can start raining at anytime can never have too many umbrellas

Hope this helps!

Oh god I HATE things like this, my friend a few years ago came over and dropped something off for me, though we hadn't seen each other for five months, and I hadn't got her anything! What a nightmare.

I think you should nip into tescos and get her a nice frame or something, flowers are a bit more birthday ish, and anything else be really hard to pick if you have just met up again.
