I didn't realise that AVG Free is finishing :-/ THat's what I use...

From the Grisoft site:

New Free Anti-Virus

GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.

So it looks like you (we) don't need to worry - just install 7.5 when it's released. In fact my software says it's release 7.5.432 :-)

OK' Now for the truth. There is no such thing as a "best free AV" All free AV's have there security holes. When it comes to free AV's there all turds. What you have to do is pick the one that stinks the least. AVG, No root kit protection, Can't remove half of what it finds, Worthless junk. Avast, No heuristic scanning in the free version except for E-mail. You go to a site that is infected with that type virus it will not detect it or remove it. There are lots of viruses that i personally seen Avast unable to remove. Avira, Has problems updating. It also has problems with faults positives. The time for a good AV is before your computer gets infected. Lots of people on here will tell you that the job of a good AV is to clean up afterward. That's something that i found to be a lie. A good AV will keep it from happening. The only one i have seen so far that works that way is Kaspersky. If your computer is clean it will stay clean with Kaspersky on watch. You can download all that free junk if you want and see if it will clean it off. But there is only one AV right now that will keep it clean. Kaspersky. (EDIT) The one below me has no idea what there talking about. By the time you download any free AV, Then a free firewall you will use more memory then a all in one would use. It's common knowledge that AVG & Avast with a free firewall will use more memory. Another one of those lies i was telling you about. Free AV's and firewalls use more memory. That's the truth. Any one who says they don't are either lying or don't know what there talking about.

Avg will still be free after January, the only thing grisoft did was update it to match their paid version...only without the extra settings that the paid version offers.

This has been posted several times in avg's free forum.

don't drop the best free anti-virus.

Hope that this helps you!

Personally, I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

I use AVG Free and it has not caused me any problems on my laptop. However when I used it on this computer it led to a crash so now use McAffe Security Centre as it came with our computer. Have not had another crash (fingers crossed! :)

See if you have got any free with your computer otherwise search across the internet. I was told by a Dell technician that the AVG Free and Adaware are the best but then most technicians in Dell will all advise you differently!

free anti-virus has come a long way in the last few years and there are some good anti-virus programs avalible for home users
however there are also some good anti-virus trials avalible aswell, take computer associates e-trust anti-virus,they do a 12 month free trial and this is a good anti-virus ,i used it for 12 months myself, you can get it from http://home3.ca.com/Microsoft/,there is also a good 6 month anti virus trial from a favourite of mine,f-secure anti-virus is in my opinion the best anti-virus money can buy,and at only £20 per year it will keep your p.c 100% virus, spyware and rootkit free, you can download the trial from http://www.f-secure.com/protectyourpc/,the link is at the bottom of the page
there are also a few 90 day trials to choose from, take a look at these panda anti-virus(http://www.pandasoftware.com/com/microsoft/english?),norton anti-virus(http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/v2/ec_main.entry25?page=1582AIndexPage&client=Symantec&sid=27674),trend micro(http://www.trendmicro.com/offers/ms-wsc/english.asp) and of course mcafee anti-virus(http://us.mcafee.com/root/landingpages/default.asp?lpname=ms_vso&cid=8448)
i have worked out that if you use all the avalible trials using the links i have given you you could get two and a half years of free virus protection
obviously if you used one that you liked you could continue to use it by subscribing to it by buying the full product
alternatively you could use a free product download such as avast 4.7(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)or the good old a.v.g(http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/)
hopefully i have given you enough options to make sure you are fully protected from any internet nasties
have a good xmas and good luck

AVg is not finishing it is inviting those who already have to upgrade to 7.5 which I have done very easily and at no cost.
