I don't mean transient, ho-hum, laziness, I'm talking about deep, personality-trait laziness.

It depends. People who have been abused are often afflicted with "learned laziness" which comes about because the abuse taught them over and over again that they have no control over their situation and anything that happens to them. And then, why is it worth doing anything, when you have no control over the results?

Also, please talk to a doctor to rule out physical causes such as hypothyroidism, other thyroid difficulties, chronic fatigue syndrome (etc).

Also, have you ruled out the possibility of depression. During depression it is difficult to find the energy to do anything at all. In that case, only treatment will fix your motivation issues.

Another possibility is burnout. Have you had a long term stressful job or set of events that has left you nearly incapacitated?

If none of those are true, than I would suggest reading up on the concept of flow as discussed by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. If you can find what brings you into such a state, and do some if it everyday, you will probably find your energy and motivation levels increasing!

Have an older sister, a mother that tells you what to do, find something that intrigues the life out of you, get a job that you really enjoy, find a friend that will nag at you, brothers that won't help around the house, leave your house messy for a week and then tear into it like a tornado and clean. All of these are guaranteed to temporarily cure an in-grown laziness habit. If all else fails, get married to a neat freak or go sky diving and don't open the parashoot before you are fifty yards above ground. This will guarantee you freedom from a life-long habit.

Excercising boosts your metabolism and gives you more energy in general. I say, do things that you both enjoy, and get you moving. Like a walk in the woods or a swim in the lake or pool, maybe some tennis or basketball with a friends. Physical activites will help you overcome laziness. If you really want to get out there and get moving, you will. It's a case of "mind over matter". Good luck!

Exercise is the best remedy for laziness - it can become a part of your life. I'm not talking running a marathon, just make a plan to take a walk every day for a week and see how you feel afterwards. I bet you'll want to get off your lazy butt and do something more every day.

The best way to overcome laziness is by increasing your energy level. Start excercising to gain more stamina and ability to sustain prolonged acitivity with no pain. If you are overweight trying to lose some weight will make you active. Gaining more muscle can also make you less tired with any work. That way you can do all day to day activities with much ease and wont feel laazy.
I used to feel lazy after my exam prep period, cos during those days i never worked out, sat on my couch and studied all day long...

Perhaps you are not lazy? Perhaps you just need to change your frame of reference. Perhaps you just need to find something you are passionate about?

Some others have suggested you could be depressed. You may want to have a medical evaluation, as there are a variety of other conditions that could sap your energy including thyroid problems and sleep apnea just to name a couple of common ones.

First look if there is a health issue that is causing you to be lazy, I got thyroid problems for a while and my energy levels dropped. If it is mental then maybe going to a therapist may help you understand why you have so little energy, maybe is just negative thoughts that keep you unmotivated and your energy levels low.

Well, its difficult to offer forth an answer not knowing exactly what you're talking about, but in order to get motivated about something you have to have an interest in it and a desire to do it.

It almost sounds like your laziness is bordering on depression. I would never suggest meds, but you should try to get interested in some things- things that make you happy, things you like to do, to stay active.

First, go to your Doctor to determine if there is something causing this. Whether it be mental or physical. Otherwise, it's a matter of ambition and determination. No different then trying to lose weight, you've got to be ready to do it.

It could be a symptom of something else. The person could have ADD or some other cinical illness.
