well i did it for 6 years or so. the most i got paid was 7 an hour plus tips the least was 2.13, so expect around 4-5 an hour. I was waiting tables and i got thrown into it on a busy night. i learned tons of drinks real quick. It depends on where you work.the most i made was during all the hurricanes in florida 2 years ago. i took home 1,000 in 2 days. I used to never walk home with less than 100$ for 6 hours shifts. but one place i did it was real bad and sometimes it was about 40 a day. that job didnt last too long. I would reccomend cocktailing to get to know the names of drinks and express your interest in bartending. If you ask for a bartending position up front u prob wont get it. But if you show them your willing to learn b4 to make the transition then your chances will be alot higher
it was fun. bs with people and i used to drink all the time. only down side was not going out afterweards and blowing it all
good luck

In most places, you have to be over 21 and have good people skills. Some places will teach you how to make the drinks, others send you to the bartending classes. Best way to learn is by actually doing, I found. Someone said cocktail waitressing is a good way to learn the drinks - that's a great idea! (And sometimes if it's slow, the bartender will be more willing to teach you....)
There's no "average" pay scale - most of your income will come from tips, like a waitperson. Some places pay you a good hourly wage, plus tips. Other places pay you on the waitstaff pay scale (meaning peanuts) and you have to make the rest up by tips. I made more as an event bartender (in a catering hall) than when I tended bar in a restaurant. The restaurant paid me waitstaff wages (which was, at the time, $2.10 an hour) but the catering hall paid me anywhere from $10 an hour for a wedding, plus tips to a flat $50 plus tips for a party. I have a friend who bartends in a Las Vegas casino and can take home $2000 a week in tips alone.
One thing you have to be aware of - be conscious about ID-ing people and watch your patrons - a good bartender will know when to cut someone off. Some states, like New York, have what they call "dram shop" laws - which, in a nutshell means, that if someone goes out (or to a party) and gets drunk, gets in a car and has an accident - not only can the drunk driver be held responsible - so can the bar or restaurant or person throwing the party be held responsible. (Criminally and civilly)
Good luck! A good bartender can make a good living.

Speaking from experience ( I am a former bartender), depending on the establishment that you are looking to work at depends on the requirements. Some places only require you to have an ability to learn and to do basic math. Other places, such as cruise ships want you to actually attend bar-tending classes,(they can give a list of places in your area). You will learn how to measure a proper serving size, alcohol laws, how to properly mix a drink, how to create the proper atmosphere, how to place an order with a distributor and how to stock your bar and keep it sanitized, among other things. With bar-tending you normally get paid by tips, though some places with also pay you a small hourly wage. If you are employed with certain cruise lines or vacation resorts that included bar service in their deals then you get paid by a higher per hour amount. There is good money in bar-tending but you will do a lot of lifting, stretching, cleaning, and staying up late. Good Luck to you!

well, you could actually go to school for it. Just check the yellow pages, or just go online and do a local search and it will find places for you to learn in the city where you live.
However, best way to be a bartender is to go get a job under a bartender and have him/her teach you. Experience is the only way you're really going to learn.
