I am a front-end web designer. I want to learn about databases using the program that will allow me to grow in the future.

I would also like to develop a database application to streamline the millions of forms I have to fill out repeatedly at my job.

I started as a DBA on a mainframe and have since gone to Oracle. I have used Access and MS SQLServer and SYBASE. MySQL is a subset of standard SQL which I have always used.

In my experience, there is not a great deal of difference. If you have Access go with that first. It is easy to learn, I even managed to do it from a Microsoft manual which means it must be easy.

If you want to learn SQL, which had the advantage of being widespread, there are plenty of inexpensive books that cover it and there is very little difference between the various vendors' implementations of SQL. So, if you can use SQL, you can in practice use it for any DB.

And once you get sucked into Microsoft products you find you need other things to make it all work, none of which are free or cheap.
