I saw a book being sold in Mass Market Paperbound cover instead of the more-commonplace Paperback or Hardcover. For some reason, it's more expensive by a dollar than its paperbound relative. What is Mass-Market paperbound, and why is it special?

A mass market paperback (MMP) is a small, usually non-illustrated, and inexpensive bookbinding format. They are commonly released after the hardback edition, and often sold in non-traditional bookselling locations such as airports and supermarkets, as well as in traditional bookstores.

Mass market paperbacks are distinguished from hardbacks also by the different business practices that publishers and booksellers apply to them. When booksellers note that books have been in stock a while and have not sold, they may return them to the publisher for a refund or credit on future orders. However, in the case of mass market paperbacks, this "return" usually means stripping the front cover, returning that for credit, and pulping the book itself. Changes in the costs of printing relative to the costs of shipping have led to the creation of trade paperbacks, which are similar in format to mass market paperbacks, but larger (near hardback size) and with different returns policies applied to them.

The previous answerers basically answered the question already...I just wanted to add that they are called "mass" market books because they are usually best seller types and are mass produced because more people will buy them, for example when a famous romance author like let's say Nora Roberts has an entire series and is very popular then people will want to buy her new books just because they liked her previous ones. So they make cheap little books that the general public can afford to purchase.
