generally you can be fired for anything, or actually for nothing. Unless you have a contract stating causes for termination or you are fired for some kind of discrimination (race, religion, etc) they can fire you just because they don't like your shoes.

An employer would be idiotic to fire an employee for not working overtime (although, I have seen some idiot bosses out there).
Think about it. The company needs people to fill extra hours, it wants people to work overtime, some comply, some do not. If you fire the people who do not, you now have to fill even more hours on top of those that you could not fill to begin with.
Madness.
What an employer might do is remember who did and who did not work and try to encourage the people who did not work to leave the company. In any event, it would be stupid to fire an employee for not working overtime but stupidity does not stop some people from doing things.

South Carolina is considered a right to work state, meaning that you can be fired for anything, and without being given a reason.. In other words, yes, you can be fired for refusing to work overtime.

Yes, you can be fired for refusing to work overtime;however if you need the time off for religious observances or the employees who are forced to work overtime are members of a protected class, relief may lie. Seek local legal counsel for further detail.

When you signed your application, did you read all of the fine print? Some companies have it written in that you are required to perform overtime as needed.
If you did and it wasn't there or you're sure that it wasn't there, then check with the Labor Dept in your state to be sure of the labor laws there.
Only they can tell you for sure if the company is in violation of your rights or if you signed them away in a contract (the application).

I would think so. You can likely be fired for any reason as long as it is not because of your race, sex, health, religion, etc.

I would think so.
Never heard of anyone not being fired for refusing to work overtime.
Why would you not?
