So i Have a really old coworker and he's pretty new to the job. We're doing Cfris Kringle at the office and I got him. He's only been working here for a few months, but I barely know anything about him. A coworker that use to work with him told me to get something from Spencers for him, but what do i get there? Please help

I think you should get him a gift card for Visa or Discover since you don't know him very well. If you don't want to do that, you could always get him wine glasses that are decorative or you could get him a DVD of an office movie, or a few office movies. Think about things that don't have too much to do with personality.

If he is an older gentleman that you DO NOT know too well, DO NOT go to Spencers for his gift. Those are gag gifts that could get YOU into trouble if he takes it the wrong way.

If he is married, maybe a giftcard to a restuarant for him & his wife. If he is a professional guy a nice pen set may work. Or maybe a classical music CD if you hear him listening to music. Does he drink coffee, maybe a mug?

Look around his desk & see what type of things he is into... if you see golf stuff or heard him take about golf, you could get him a nice golf ball set... golfers never have enough balls!

The Visa gift cards work well if you cannot find out exactally what he is into.

Are you talking really old? Like, probably needs a cane? Whatever you do, DON'T get him something at Spencer's - anything off-color like that could cause tensions in the workplace. I'd go for something as politically correct as possible; cliche is even ok. If he's got grandkids (any pics on his desk, etc? Should be easy to tell if they're close). Get him one of those multi-flavored popcorn tins. Unless he's diabetic, and Christmasy treat would probably be good. And how would you know that?

How "old" is really old?

Since you don't know this fellow very well, maybe a "conservative" and "safe" gift would be better???

I am suggesting you get him a mug and maybe a mug "warmer." This is a small device you plug in and it heats up the mug. You normally have it at your desk so you can keep an eye on it so it doesn't over heat.

Another suggestion would be gift cards for like coffee or lunch.
He can use them and your money won't go to waste.

Just a few ideas from someone else who is "really old" as well.

How old is really old? Is there a $$ limit?

A nice pen (or pen and pencil set) is always a good gift.
A CD if you know what type of music he likes.
A gift certificate to Starbucks or a nearby restaurant where you know he eats lunch.
Does he celebrate Christmas? Buy a nice ornament for his tree.
A bottle of wine.
A gift basket of fine cheeses.

I have been told that saying "thank you" after someone says, "happy holidays" is shirk. I don't believe that. I gave my family gifts this month, they opened them last week (my family isn't Muslim). I wrapped them in newspaper (with them laughing at me) and they gave me a gift wrapped in non-christmasy paper, too. I am not celebrating Christmas, we celebrate the fact we can see each other since I live 1500 miles away. Saying "thank you" after someone gives you a gift (regardless of the occasion) is not shirk. Tell them thank you before they think you're ungrateful.

A gift card to Barnes & Noble would be good. He can get a book or movie or cd that way. Many options there.

A small book of tasteful jokes or anecdotes. Nothing profane or controversial.
