I frequently get alot of headaches (like every other day).... especailly if I'm @ school. I'm pretty sure i know what causes them: (did you know flourescent lights blink every 8 seconds, like a strobe light? and strobe lgihts are known to cause migranes) Flourescent lights, not enough water intake, if i put off going to the bathroom, also if i don't get enough protein which sucks cuz it makes me fat. but i need to know some good cures. I HATE medicine(my dad's the type of hypocondirac who perposefully goes to the hospital and gets treated cuz they like it/want the attention) like things that can prevent it and/or treat it. herbs would be nice, but i've got a tight budget. i heard feverfew works, but is it like garunteed? in short, i need something realiable nad fast-acting, if such a thing existes...... usually, i have to lie down in the dark, or soak in water hot enough that i get 3-degree burns. also lavendar in any form works, but do you know anything else?

Hi, I am a massage therapist and frequently treat people with migraines and common headaches. I too suffer from headaches after being in a room with fluorescent lights. I used to get headaches in school too.
It is important to locate the headache as it can tell you a lot about what the problem is. If the headache is around the eyes, it can mean you need glasses. Are you having problems seeing the board at school? Do you need to squint to see your books? I would go for a quick eye exam to double check. My husband is an optician and he helps many people with eye headaches.
If the headaches are in the back of your head always at the same spot you need to see your doctor.

Drink lots of water!!!!!! That is so important!!!!!! Stop the caffeine, if you drink coka cola, DON'T! It is not good for you at all, and will only add to your problem.
Have a look at your diet, do you eat fruits? 3 a day is best in the morning! Try a smoothie for breakfast.
Eat lots of broccoli! It contains more calcium than milk and essential vitamins and minerals. Try steamed broccoli and carrots with sea salt sprinkles. It's yummy!

I hope that helps! Good Luck!

I'v suffered with them for years and have yet to have found relief without medication. The best med I have found is Zomig..2mg. Doesn't make me sleepy..I take as soon as I feel a migrain coming on. 80% of the time I have instant relief. However, the times that it does not work the only thing I can go do is find a very quiet, dark and cool room..and like everyone else.. use a cold ice pack. There are times when a cold ice pack does not work and I have used a heating pad. Sounds crazy, but sometimes the heat actually feels better. If the pain is more in the base of my skull..heat is better.. If anyone ever finds a real cure for these things what a glorious day that will be!!

Hi there, i also get Migraine and have done for 30 years. First thing i'd say, you need to find out your personal triggers. Mine is hightened emotion (no jokes please!!!) i went through all the food tests as a child and all the typical ones (coffee, cheese, oranges) came back negative. Anyway enough about me, you don't have to go to a hospital to work this out, just keep a detailed diary every day of what you've eaten, where you've been and how you felt. Then you'll be able to work out some pattens. Periods and irregular bowel movement (constipation) effect Migraine as well so keep track of your own body cycles. Lastly, apart from a darkened room with a cold flannel (which is my favourite and only option if i get a sevear attack) i've found this fantastic balm called "Tigar Balm" it comes in 2 colours (red for dark skined people and white for light skined people) i'm not sure where you are based but i'm sure you could get some from the net. it costs around £2 for a small jar and looks like lip balm and has the texture of lipstick. (for Gods sake don't rub it on your lips though!!!) Rub that on your forehead and it smells of cloves and after about 10 minutes it creates a feeling of coldness and the migraine is relieved for roughly 2-3 hours, which maybe enough time for it to dissapear completely.. Don't put too much on or put it close to your eyes as it can make them water. but it's great stuff, fits in your pocket, is completely natural and lasts for about 2 hours. LOVELY!!!
Thats for the short term relief, long term would be the diary and to work out your personal triggers to avoid them in the future.

Magnesium tablets. It's proven that if you suffer from headaches then your body is lacking in minerals. Magnesium or sea salt (has magnesium in it)(if you're not good at taking pills). It's a preventative, meaning you have to take the pills daily or use the salt daily. You will see results in about a month and it really works.
I used to get migraines all the time, about 1 a week, now I get about 1 a year........I like that much better. Good luck.

FYI......you body will sluff off any extra magnesium so you don't have to worry about build up.

Ive heard that "Feverfew", works but you have to get your body use to it, which means it could take months before your body accepts the herb. Protein DOES NOT make you fat, eating garbage makes you fat! If you are getting a migraine, then nothing works better than Excedrin Migraine.

There are no garantees with alternative medicines. I've had mirgrains for 8 years and none of that alternative stuff worked for me.

You might have to bite the bullet and see a Neurologist, that's what I do and he has me on Topamax for prevention and Stadol Nasal Spray for when I get one. If you don't have insurance you may want to go to your local hospital and ask if they have any charity programs you can get into.

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches can be
caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more
serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information

See a chiropractor, a subluxation in the atlas or axis in the cervical spine causes migrains, headaches, etc. I currenty am under chiropractic care and whenever I get migraines or simple headaches the adjustment knocks them out of the park.
