First of all are you good with your hands? Have you done a fair bit of DIY? If so then Doing an Apprenticeship as a joiner or carpenter or cabinetmaker can be a good choice BUT it takes several years of learning and then a few years of gaining practical wide ranging experience before you can consider yourself anywhere near a competent Wood Butcher.

If you do though it can be a very rewarding career in both satisfaction and cash and I say go for it but do not jump into it expecting millionaire status straight away as that is a recipe for disaster because you will fall into deep deep sh1t.

my ex was a joiner he earned £10 an hour fitting kitchens, then every year he worked at the company his pay went up by £1 till he worked there for 6yrs and then it goes up to £20 so yes the money is good.
You need to get a reputation as a skilled work person and then start doing things for people in your spare time to build on your own rep and not the companies(you could tell people that you work for your name and that if they ever need anything doing again to call your employer and request you) then when you do go solo they'll recognise your name in ads and things and contact you.
Declaire all earnings to tax man or you will be in big trouble if you don't.

well, if you're considering it you obviously think you've got a chance at achieving it.

The waiting lists are full but hopefully you'll be able to get on a course or get a book & start training.

If you do, you'll have a job for life, you'll be able to work abroad because the carpetry language (signs & whatever) they're all universal and nobody will object to have a good piece of furniture because of stylistic issues, no one worth the time of day anyway.

If you did this successfully, there's no shortage of work and you could comfortbly earn more than most doctors do in a year.

i think it's a good idea, any way you look at it working to be a joiner/carpenter could be one of the best decisions of your life/career.

First things fiirst. Yes joinery is a skilled trade and therefore earn top money for skilled, EXPERIENCED workers.
Get a few years under your belt learning the skills and I'm sure, with time, you will be self employed in a year or two. A nd raking it in.
