OK!
All units of measure are defined against standards that are controlled by governments, since they are the basis of much of commerce and are required for a unified scientific and legal understanding.
In 1958 the United States and the Commonwealth of Nations defined the length of the international yard to be 0.9144 metres; a yard is exactly 3 feet long. The meter, in turn, is defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures as the distance travelled by light in absolute vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
Therefore, to get down to the basic definition:
1 foot = (1/3) * (0.9144) * (distance traveled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 seconds)
So,
1000 feet = (1000/3)*(0.9144)*( distance traveled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 seconds)
In everyday terms, 1000 feet is 3 and 1/3 times the distance between the goal lines on a football field. Or, it is somewhat less than 1/5 of a mile. If you have an 18 inch step, 1000 feet is about 667 paces. If you drive 60 mph, 1000 feet is passed every 11.37 seconds.
