[Middle English, large, from Old French gros, from Late Latin grossus, thick. N., sense 2, Middle English grosse, from Old French grosse (douzain), large (dozen), feminine of gros

I think that the last line is the clue - a large dozen - a gross being a dozen dozens, 12 X 12 = 144.................

I know calling something 'a gross' sounds gross, but that's because it is another language. The French word for 'a lot' or 'large' is "GROS." Later it came to be applied to an exact large number, namely 144. That is 12 X 12.
