If I understand your question correctly, it's rather simple. The "scarlet letter" was a method used by some, not all, Puritan groups(a fairly strict christian based religious sect) to mark a person or persons whom had committed adultery. Usually, these poor(not just to mean those who had little money) people were women. They were singled out because of the fact that they became pregnant. The capital as well as bright red letter "A", would be sewn onto the offending persons clothing by force if necessary.

The A stands for her crime, adultry. Basically, as a punishment, she had to wear it so everyone would know. It's an excellent book, I highly recommend it.

I haven't read that book in many years, but the best I remember, it was about a woman who committed adultry and was forced to wear a red A somewhere on her clothes. (Maybe her cloak, don't remember)

Hester wore an "A" for adulterer as punishment, but she wore it with pride (and a nice thing for her daughter to look at)!
