How exactly does that work if they live in a communist society? I'm assuming the majority are poor, but how did the rich become rich? Also how do they get paid? Does the government set the wages or is it just that they overtax? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just don't know how it all works. Thanks!

Many rich, many middle-class, and many poor.

Capatalism is alive and well in China. I've been here for several years now, and had the same thoughts as you did when I first arrived. But I realize now the only the Communist about daily life in China is the upper-level goverment. Day to day, same as in USA. They have to pay rent / morgage, buy food, pay for education, pay for health care, etc etc. Anyone can start their own business. Income taxes are only slightly higher than in the US, believe it or not.

The "communism", as far as I can tell, exists mainly in the governments complete control over decisions. What they say, goes. So, right now, capitalism is OK. If they want to change that later, it changes. But don't expect it to change any time soon----they've learned, as the US did (but is starting to forget), that sharing the wealth among all people equally only gets you an unmotivated, poor, stagnant economy. So, they let capitalism run the ecomony, but keep tight control on culture / laws / etc.
