It smokes like hell when I first start it. Not out of the hood, but out of the tail pipe. I run it for a while and it goes away, but man, when it starts, I'm amazed the fire dept. isn't called! Help!

The engine is rebuilt, and it uses up oil.

OK, Just the Facts:
you have a rebuilt short block, does not include heads.
the intake valve seals are worn out on the heads
since it runs good otherwise just replace the seals
all you need to do is remove the valve covers
remove the sparkplugs
using your compression tester tool feed compressed air into the cylinder your working on through the sparkplug hole
remove the intake valve rocker arm
compress the valve spring using a special tool
this tool has a turny thing on it like a water faucet and is designed to compress the spring with the heads still on and in the vehicle.
remove the keepers and the valve spring
replace the seal at the base of the valve stem
BE CAREFUL -- if you push the valve too hard you will hear your airflow start to hiss louder. -- then suddenly WHOOSH and your valve disappears. Now you have to pull the heads. LOL
this should give you the picture , good luck and these ARE the facts!

never heard of a 'rebuild check', been doing this a long time too, nobody mentioned the condition of your valve guides, they may need knurling, maybe even replacing. I do not know but is this a rebuilt 'short block'? does this condition exist after running awhile then sitting at idle it smokes too? in addition to the valve guides, and valve seals, the oil return drain holes in the heads may be clogged up,and need to be cleaned, ( I have personally seen this problem) this can be accomplished by simply removing the valve covers, the return holes are in the lowest 'dip' at the end of the heads, front and rear. If they are clogged, oil will accumulate, and be sucked into the engine at the valve guides as the oil level rises in the valve covers. Well, I hope this gives you something to start with, Good luck!.

I would tear it apart again, check all the Rings, Seals, use alotta White Lube onthe Crank and Cam. Check Lifters and Valves, basically a rebuild check. Wich every good mechanic does after the second Break In period of 50 hours.

Worn, cracked intake valve seals in the top of the head.
They keep engine oil from working past the intake valve stem and making it's way into the piston\cylinder.
There's not much you can do about it, short of haveing them replaced.
Kind of pricey repair too.

Is the leak coming from the shifter linkage section? Wipe each little thing down actual good and computer screen the trans for sparkling coolant leak section to discover the excellent spot of leaking. If from the shift selector section, do away with the shift linkage linked on the trans and do away with it you will see a shaft which will positioned on down and permit the fluid to leak previous it, use anew o ring and prepare some heavy grease to it, in case you could in good shape 2 o earrings onto it, then do it. this could cease the leak. I even have a quicker 4 hundred trans with an identical situation and this fixed it for me, i became advised this became elementary on the Th400 and TH350 trans. gl.....

valve seals are hard and brittle they can be replaced with head still on the engine but you probably should consider a rebuild as i would assume you have lots of miles on this vehicle

if the smoke is blueish colored it could be burning oil that probably means you need new head gaskets wich means a lot of money to fix
