Her body will go through an acceptance period... no pun intended.
all is okay. I am on it. I can say my doctor has suggested I go 2 months and three weeks between shots. This will improove the chance of no menstral bleeding in between shots. She should consult her doctor for safety though, since I have no idea what her health is.

There is just one depo shot. I've been on the depo shot for years and I've never had any side effects (ie. fatigue, light headedness, loss of appetite). However, the depo shot completely stopped my cycle... that's about it. It took me a little over half a year to some-what regulate. Everyone is different though. I can't say you'll stop or won't have any side effects because your body is different from mine. I love this shot because you only get it once every three months (the shot is given in the hip) and it's 99.99% effective just like every other form of birth control. I'd say go for it. If you symptoms worsen, then I'd consider going back to your original BC. :) Good Luck.

I am a nurse with the public health department and have given several Depo Provera injections. Some women experience no menstrual cycle when taking Depo, while others never stop bleeding. The pause of menstruation and intermittent bleeding after wards was probably caused by her body's adjustment to the medication. It is normal for women on this medication to have no menstrual cycle while taking it, so everything is fine there. Things to watch out for is mood changes/depression, shortness of breath or chest pain, nausea/vomiting, headaches, and increased weight gain in a short period of time. If any of this occurs she needs to see her doctor as soon as possible. I don't know the protocols in the state where you live, but our protocols here only allow Depo Provera for 2yrs due to the tremendous loss of calcium in the bones. There has been a time limit posted to this birth-control because of the HIGH incidence of osteoporosis in very young women. I would highly suggest that your girlfriend take a calcium supplement (multi-vit. doesn't supply enough calcium) daily while taking Depo and possibly for several months/years afterward. Unfortunately, everything has it's downfall. Hope some of this info has helped you.

This is completely normal for the shot. I stopped having periods immediately, but some people have them off and on for up to 12 months after taking the shot. She just needs to be sure she's getting them on time to be protected. If she has ANY concerns, she should certainly make an appointment with her doc and talk them all out with him or her.

I was on the Depo shot for awhile and it's completely normal to have a period whenever, where ever, and for whatever time length. After awhile, I gained about 15 pounds and didn't have a period anymore. I ended up switching back to the pill. No worries to you and your friend, everything shoudl be OK. Good luck!!

My wife decided to get the shot after our second child and she bled on and off (mostly on) for months, doctor said that was a "normal" side-effect. Bullshit!!! She also became incredibly bitchy during this time, anything would set her off into a tirade that would last for hours so I went to Iraq as a contractor for a few months just to get away from her. I told her I wasn't coming back till she got off that damn shot and the effects had a chance to wear off. I would rather be shot at and blown up than go through the HELL of a wife on the Depo shot!!! Stay clear of the Depo shot!!!

Don't get the next shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unlike the pill, you cannot go off it when adverse side effects show up (notice I said WHEN, nof if). this is the worse form of birth control out there. I know it sounds convenient, but what it does to a woman's body is astrocious and should be illegal.
Consider the Ovulation Method. With a little education and awareness, it is actually more effective than the pill, without any side effects. I've used it for over 8 years without any accidents and I thank god daily that I discovered it.
