AKAMARU only becomes a Two Headed Dog whilst the "Man Beast Combination Transformation: Double-Headed Wolf" Jutsu is used. otherwize, AKAMARU stays in this form: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Akamaru.jpg
AKAMARU is Kiba Inuzuka's pet dog, and also used for Kiba's ninja techniques.

I think you may be referring to the Kyuubi, the nine-tailed fox that coexists in Naruto's body. It is the strongest of the tailed beasts and fell in battle to the Fourth Hokage twelve years ago and was sealed into a newborn baby, Uzumaki Naruto. Whenever Naruto taps into the Kyuubi's power, he surrenders some of his free will and the Kyuubi slowly gains control.
