"The Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon
Synopsis....a nurse from 1941 ends up back in time to 1742 or so in Scotland. It has romance, excitement, sex...and may seem like a romance novel, but as a guy, I thought the books were incredible.
Be forwarned though, each book is roughly 700+ pages (and there's 5 of them or so). But they are really terrific and great to read.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is a great book. It's probably in the young adult section of book stores and libraries, but alduts and teens enjoy it equally. Everyone I know that has read it loves it.

Try "She's come undone" by Wally Lamb. If you liked "I know this much is true" I highly recommend it! Also, try any of the Mitch Albom books.
