Sherman is mythologized for the "march to the sea" newspaper accounts.
The critical things about Sherman is that his daring war time tactics was the first planned effort to live off the land of the vanquished rather than through long supply lines that could be cut. As a result of this battlefield strategy, he developed the "scorched earth" warfare tactic with devasted through burning and killing everything in their path. It was Sherman's success that accelerated the end of the war and caused the seeds for deep deep hatred of the north after the war. It was Sherman's forces that destroyed the "old south" forever.
Go to Savannah GA if you want to see what the true south was like.

Yes--Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, 1820-1891. He led the Union Army down to Georgia. I am 77, and my Grandfather's father was a teacher, conscripted into the Union Army, and he was Sherman's "Journalist". His journal kept the records of the army's devasting march through the South. The journal is now in a university library in Chicago, somewhere. I've often wanted to get a copy!! My uncle was a great history buff and used to tell tales of the national struggle!
