I have been coughing and hacking for the past 8 days now and I am not getting any better. I have been drinking lots of water, staying warm, getting as much rest as I can, drinking herbal tea, and I started taking Robitussin three days ago. I have also been taking these vitamin filled packets called "Emergen-C" but I'm still practically hacking up a lung.

I also just started taking echenacea last night.

I haven't smoked one cigarette since I got sick and I thought that would help. I haven't even wanted a cigarette with my scratchy throat, slight sinus pain, and flemmy coughs.

Oh, my family's been going through that same stupid thing. I'm so sorry for you. It's the cough that just won't go away. If it lasts much longer though, you may need a chest X-ray just to be sure it hasn't developed into pneumonia, as it can. Our hospitals here are just full of people with pneumonia. One good thing is that if you've been off the cigs that long, you would have a great head start toward quitting, if you were so inclined! Good luck with that. Anyhow, lots of clear fluids should help keep the phlegm from being so thick that it's hard and painful to cough up. That's really the best advice. That, and steer clear of any dairy products which can thicken the mucous.

Both echinacea and vitamin C would have been good as you were coming down with a cold. It's somewhat too late now.

Instead, try sipping slippery elm tea to help coat your throat, avoid all sweets and maybe take valerian herb before you go to bed to relax achey musicles and help you sleep. This is the perfect time to stop smoking, especially with the New Year and a clean slate on the horizon.

Hope you feel better.

join the club. I quit smoking because I got so sick. It's been 13 days I quit and I'm still coughing and runny nose. I think it's because I'm having withdrawals. I was told you get sick for a long time if you quit smoking to get rid of the unwanted contamination that was poisoning your body from the smoke. I can't wait to get over this sickness!

Unless your experiencing fever, your just going to have to wait for this cold to go through it's cycle. Which is about two weeks. Doctor's don't like to put their patients on antibiotic anymore unless they have infection for sure because is lowers a persons resistance. If you keep taking antibiotics when their really not needed, and a true illness comes along, your body will not be able to fight. Hope you feel better soon!!!

THIS WILL WORK!!!!!!!!!!!! buy the powdered hot mustard, they sell it where you get spices at the grocery store, mix a tblspoon with warm water into a paste, put that paste on a paper towel spread it around and have someone put it on your back over your lungs, then cover you with a bath towel, leave it on for 15-30 min but no longer cause it'll burn you, you'll feel it hot but it;s ok. when you take it off and wipe it up , it'll break up the phlem and you'll cough it up

That is exactly what my boyfriend is doing and i would like to know why as well but maybe she is getting comfortable with you. Also it depends if you are bf/gf. if you are then yeah she's getting use to you but if not, then maybe she is not feeling the vibe. good luck though!

Try going for a fast job for several miles. You'll feel bad for a short while, but in the long run it will help greatly.
