I have had court papers stating that I owe the original amount of the suit and "judgement interest".

First, what is judgement interest?

Second, can judgement interest be negotiated down if I got a lawyer?

Any legal advice here would be helpful.

Thanks

You should ask a judge or attorney the questions you have here.

It depends on the state, but judgment interest usually begins to run from the time payment was demanded before filing suit, so if someone demanded 4 years ago that someone owed them 100,000 and then they filed suit a year later and won, the judge can take on judgment interest that would go back to 4 years ago when they demanded the 100,000. You may want to check with a lawyer, because unless you appeal something like that, then you are out of luck.

Judgement interest is the interest that grows off of when they judged you at the beginning of the final hearing. This can't be negotiated.
