I would do a time capsule theme

just have everyone bring clippings and memorable stuff from 2006 and vote on the best 10 and then put it all in a capsule. This will cause everyone to interact and they could tell those sad/funny/proud stories and share them with friends and family. This is a good way to find out more about each other and make memories at the same time.

Everyone comes as a character from any of the Austin Power's movies.

Think of all the options.

AND - you get disco balls, lights; the whole theme fits New Years Eve to a T!

A 70s or 80s superheroes theme: Ask your guests to dress up as their favourite superhero. Maybe you could have a 'Most superhero lookalike' contest.

You could recycle pages from old superhero comic books as invitation cards. You could use cardboard paper to draw gigantic speech bubbles with the words 'Wham!' or 'Bam!' etc and paste them all over your walls.

You could also laminate some of the nicer comic book pages into tablemats. Mix green and blue colourings in clear-coloured drinks and serve your guests the drinks in beakers or big test tubes. For music, you could play selected theme songs from the superheroes cartoons/movies.

The theme? How about honoring those people who are required to work on New Years Eve.

Cut-out pictures of Nurses, Policemen, utility workers, Telephone Operators, etcetera and tape them to the walls. Then have your guests guess what the theme is.

We once had a black & white party. Everyone dressed up in nice "after five" attire. All the decorations were black & white, all noisemakers etc. Serve light, easy to make snacks & have a midnight toast.
Honestly, most people with kids LOVE a chance to spend the evening with grown ups that they are just happy to be somewhere!

Have the theme as "Pirates of the Carribean".

I had a party like that, It was awesome ! Costumes are cheap, and you can always find great drinks for the theme (Rum Punch, etc.)

We do the PJ party and everyone sleeps over, crashes where they do, bring a sleeping bag or blankie and pillow, have popcorn, punch (spiked ) and movies, we send the kiddies to a friends house with the teen sitters and they do the same thing, without the spiked punch.

Do a Titanic theme, especially if you've a swimming pool and your guests don't mind getting their tuxes or ballgowns wet. You can get some bulk chunks of styrofoam, carve them with a heated knife or wire hanger, and float them in the pool for icebergs. :)
