Narita actually has a number of options to kill time. There are a lot of restaurants in the international terminal, so getting something decent to eat after airline food will make a nice change. There are also a ton of stores sellinging Japanese goods, foods and artwork which makes for easy souvenier shopping. There are also salons where you can get a manicure or a massage. It's also nice to just walk around and get a bit of exercise after being stuck on a plane for a few hours.

You can get a short stay visa at immigration, take the Skyliner into Narita and have a stroll. There's a great temple, lots of nice restaurants and shops. Narita is overlooked by most travelers who either think of it as just a transit point and stay in the airport or stay at the hotels surrounding the airport. But the town itself is a nice slice of Japan. Look for the brochures that recommend some places to go to - you'll find them at the airport.

And take the Skyliner back into the Airport and get back on your plane. It's cheap and fun.

If you have a long flight there are two things that you really want to do: stretch out and freshen up. You can do both of these things at Narita International. You can rent a "nap room" by the hour where you will have privacy and can relax. They also have private and very clean shower facilities in the same area. That's what I would do.

Definitely check out the showers.
They're clean and private. And I'm not talking about showers you find at gyms. These showers are regular showers you'd find inside homes in Japan albeit a little cramped.

Last time I went there was a room where you can play Play Station. But honestly unless you get to go outside past customs then I don't think there's a whole lot to do except check the duty free shops and get a bite to eat.
If you can go out however to where the Airline check-in counters are, there's tons to do. And much better restaurants, not to mention a McDonalds if you don't feel like J-food.

Narita is huge, and in 4 hours you could have a good chance to wander around and check out some shops. You wont really have time to go out and check out the city. You could go and chat to people and practice your Japanese, or go shopping or something.

4 hours means you will probably just transit and not enter the country officially. In both international terminals there are some typical duty free shops and souvenier shops. The restauraunts are better than airline food, but not top or great examples of Japanese food. If you can actually enter the country and make it to the shops and restauraunts on the other side, you will have much better choices for souveniers and food.
