(a Christmas present), would you tell me you don't like it, or would you thank me for taking the time and buying you something? I mean really, isn't it the thought that counts?

Yup, it really is the thought that counts. I'd be grateful for any present anyone gives me.

I would probably say thank you and pray there was a gift receipt in the bottom of the box. I once got a pizza stone for Christmas...when I was 11. Now, I would love to have kitchen supplies, but at the time, that was a tough present to say thank you for!

I would say something other than I don't like it, but I would try to take it back.

On the other hand of your "its the thought that counts" argument, if I spend my money on a gift, I'd prefer the person took back my original gift and got something they'd actually want rather than leave it sit unused in a drawer somewhere.

My response would depend on our friendship. If we were very close, I may say something, especially if I gave you a list of things I wanted. If we weren't all that close, I would thank you for the gift- in fact, I would send you a nicely worded thank-you note.

Depending on the gift- I would probably give it away to another friend who may like it (not re-gifting, just give it away). Or, I would just give it to charity- like the Good Will.

I personally would be very touched if you were to buy me something, whether I liked it or not, so give it a go! Of course it's the thought that matters, but it would avoid clangers if you found out a bit about your recipient's tastes beforehand, n'est-ce pas?

I would definitely thank you for your time, thought, and the money it took. No hidden expectations should exist that I would use it, wear it, or keep it for eternity though. The thought is all that counts, stuff is just stuff after all.

It is the thought that really counts. People that complain are just
being shallow and thinking of their own feelings only.
