yes in new york if you have limited income there are many places such as "legal aid" that will assist you or give you listing to other agencies that will help. also go online and type in free divorce and your state to see what you can find.

Cheap maybe, but not free. Contact a local legal aid organization. There is usually one in every town, they are usually owned by an attorney but they are usually run by paralegals who can provide you with paperwork to fill out yourself. Paralegals are not to give legal advice, but they often do, and they are often wrong. It could come back to bite you. If you have any property at all then seek an attorney. If the proceedings are swift and the issues resolved without extensive negotiation, your costs will be minimal.

Remember, the cost of a divorce always depends upon the two people involved. It can be simple, quick and cheap or exhaustive, time consuming and costly beyond belief. It isn't the attorney's fault when a divorce costs a lot of money, it is the fault of the two people who continue to battle over every little thing.

Good luck.

I filed myself using Completecase.com. The fee is $249.00. I was very pleased with the services. It has all the forms for each state you are in. It was not difficult at all to put the information needed, it is a step by step process. I would recommend this site. You can do this online and print the forms and have your spouse read them and sign them. I paid for the forms and had my spouse pay for the court cost. But you can have the court cost waived if you have the proof that you cannot afford it.

Calling your local courthouse will tell you the filing fee.

Good Luck

Here in California they have low cost "do it yourself" divorces where you take an all day class (to find out what you have to do to file the paperwork, do the "leg work") There is a "nomnal" fee to cover court costs however if you can show proof that you can't afford the fee it will be waived as well, but you HAVE to sign up for the class and you HAVE to follow all of their instructions. You might want to check with your local county court to see if there is something like that available where you live.

there isn't any such element as a free divorce considering that no matter if you flow with no lawyer and do it your self (professional se), there are courtroom prices that could be paid. In maximum places it isn't feasible to do a specialist se divorce action once you've little ones from the marriage.

i wish!
but you can go to office depot or office max and pick up a DIY DIVORCE KIT and it has all the papers that need to be filed with the probate court. its $39.99 but is very complicated! i advice anyone who is not literate of legal termanology no to go this route. if you cant afford an attorney, contact your local legal aide office and they should be able to help you out with a portion if not all.

Internet papers are available. If you agree on your property settlement, you and he (she) fill them out and file at the county court house. Cost is $15, at least that's what it is in California. $15 is about as close to free as you can come....

if you have no kids or a lot of assets, you can represent yourself. you can get most of the paperwork on line. check with your clerk of court for what else you need. also ask what the filing fee is.

If you both agree and the split is amicable, you can file yourself at the courthouse. A small filing fee and they will process it. If you have minor children, it will be different.
