That's hard. Based on the books and not the movies, I would have to say Faramir (with Eowyn and Frodo as close seconds). It's hard to choose though!

I first read LOTR (and then the Hobbit after) in the 60's and have reread it every few years since. Jackson did an extraordinary job bringing the books to the screen, I still prefer the books (so many more details, so much more character and relationship development and so much richer and fuller). All the characters are favorites because there could not be the same story with each of them. Oddly, Frodo the hero ought to be a favorite but he isn't--not sure why. He never seems to have the same depth and interest as all the others, he's almost just a prop, the beast of burden who carries the ring to it's end. I like Samwise for his devotion to Frodo and his endless optimism and yet the way Sam refers to Frodo as "master" or "sir" and Frodo's assumption that he's entitled to treat Sam as a subservient diminuative, not even bothered me a lot. There were many times Sam was the superior hero, the one who kept the faith, who found ways to motivate Frodo to go on. My other favorite was Smeagol--pathetic but sad, confused, morphed, the battle of good and bad in one warped guy, and in the end, the very one who took the ring back to the fire (unintentionally but still). Always love elves. And for a long time I kept wishing there were hobbits and elves, ents and other beings of Middle Earth living obscurely in the wild places. I still want to live in the Shire in a hobbit house.

Inundated In SF... I agree that all the characters play an integral roll in the books/movies, but they all have their burdens to carry. It is truly a story about hardships, and coming to grasps of them in the face of war no-less, but at the same time keeping positive and inspiring each other... What was that quote about leaving no courage for yourself?

Gandalf is the best hands down. He has the best fighting style as well as has a bunch of knowledge of just about everything. Not to mention what he wore was amazing. Hope this helps!

Though I love the books, and have read them yearly for the past 32 years, I honestly like Treebeard the most. Theres so little known about him, and its very sad that his race is going extinct.

My favorite character is probably Faramir with Galadriel a close second.
