Lincoln's election was what started the secession of southern states. Many of the states proclaimed that if Lincoln was elected then they would seceed. Lincoln's election platform was not to end slavery (as is commonly believed) but to stop slavery from expanding. It was only later, after the Civil War had started, that Lincoln came out on the position that slavery should be abolished.
