I get off work when the last bus pulls out of the parking lot (around 3:30). Teaching is a very family friendly job. You can probably have your kids come to the same school that you work in if you'd like. Otherwise, most days you are able to leave right about when the kids get out. The only exceptions to that are days that you have staff meetings and other committee meetings. If you do choose to leave right when you're allowed, expect to bring a lot of work home with you. There's always planning and grading to be done. I usually get to work about 45 minutes early so that I can get a lot of that out of the way and still leave right when I can. I do a significant amount of work at home, but it's a lot more relaxed for me to just do it at home instead of staying late. There are also other reasons that teaching is a family friendly occupation such as being able to use your sick leave for staying home with sick children. Most school systems expect teachers are the family type. If you do choose to go into teaching, good luck!

At my school, the first bell rings at 7:50 am and the last bell rings at 2:45 pm. Teachers should be at the school by 7:30 am, but it's okay to leave around 3:00 as long as there isn't a meeting. Keep in mind that to be hired as a teacher, most schools will expect you to make some sort of committment to extra-curricular activities (a sports team, musical theatre, etc.) You may also be required to participate in morning, recess, lunch or afternoon supervision. All of this will be outlined in the contract you sign.
Keep in mind that school opening and closing times are usually determined not by the school, but by bus companies. Often the same bus has to reach an elementary school, then a middle school, then a high school.

Everywhere I have lived, the lower elementary students begin their day later and leave school later than the older students. This will give you more time in the morning to get young children to daycare, but you will probably not be able to pick them up until 4 or 5 in the afternoon. Also, keep in mind that as a teacher, there are certain times when you will be expected to work late into the evening - like open houses, concerts, and parent-teacher conferences. So, you will have to make childcare arrangements for those times as well (assuming that your spouse/partner will be the one going to YOUR children's open houses, concerts, and conferences should there be a conflict).
As for teaching being a family friendly occupation, there are pros and cons like every occupation. You know you will have weekends and long holidays off to spend with your family. But you will also spend a lot of time in the evenings grading and lesson planning. Depending on where you work, there will be different allowances made for taking time off to care for sick children. But, I don't think that it is a family un-friendly occupation. I have several teachers in my family, and they seem to balance the demands very well.

Teaching is on of the most family friendly occupations in the world. You have summers off with your kids, you have your holidays off, and you can take sick days if your kids are sick much easier than most jobs. Teachers usually stay about an hour or so after school lets out. And sometimes they do take work home. You will more than likely have your evenings off (except for open house). The only downfall with teaching is politics and discipline (if you have a good principal, discipline may not be too bad). If you are looking for a job who understands you having a family, teaching is it!

It is possible. I would assume the school board would tell you that when you get hired if they authorize random drug testing. Given the drug stays in your system for several days even if you only smoked on weekends or in the evenings you would test positive and lose your job. It just doesn't seem worth it to take that chance. So the intelligent thing to do here is stop your pot smoking habit if you want to become an elementary school teacher.

Most teachers are allowed to leave 10 -15 minutes after the last bell. If you have bus duty you may be asked to remain an additional 20-30 minutes or in a few situations you may be asked to stay until the last child leaves campus. it varies greatly with the school district. I have never stayed longer than 15 minutes after the last bell.
