I have dreams like that all of the time. When I asked my dad about he said he had dreams like that too. I really want to know why it feels like a force is holding u down so it is hard to sit up. Is it because ur mind is getting up in the dream?

Some professionals now claim that the condition known as Sleep Paralysis is a combination of being awake and dreaming at the same time. The reason the body is paralysed is because the brain stops the body from moving during REM sleep. This is a natural occurance, the body's safety mechanism to stop you from thrashing out during a dream. So you have this combination of being physically asleep but mentally awake. A kind of 'twilight zone' of the conciousness.

Well, if you're dreaming that you're on the edge of wakeing up and you can't move, then it's sleep paralysis which is when your body thinks you're still in REM sleep, but your mind begs to differ. It's normal.
If you're dreaming and you simply cannot get up in the dream, either it's symbolic of you feeling as though you can't do something, that you're being held in some position you'd rather not be in *stuck in a stereotype you don't like, stuck in a job you'd rather not need, etc* Or you're a pothead and you're dreaming that you're high ^_^ *jk, take no offence*

I don't think anything or an unknown force is actually holding you down, but perhaps you are still dreaming and coming out of your sleep at the same time.

I've had a number of dreams where I wind up either speaking or yelling at someone in the dream. I've often had the sensation that I was actually unable to open my mouth and speak the words, regardless of how frantically I tried, only to find myself actually waking up either speaking or yelling. Scares the crap out of my wife, but the immediate sensation is that I am completely unable to speak!

It's like you're awake and want to get up but you can't. I used to be like that lying on my stomach. I heard an old wives tale that it's a witch riding your back. Crazy superstition but I usually cry when this happens because I'm really scared. It's really weird. It's like I'm crying out for help but no one can hear me.

Yeah, this is what happens when you are awakened out of REM sleep. It s an awful experience, but withi a few seconds, you will gain back control

I get these all the time... I have no idea what to read from it, though (not that I think dreams are particularly meaningful).

It is because you're still in a very deep sleep.
