It depends what operating system you are running.

If you are reinstalling Windows XP then starting the setup process from the CD will allow you to reformat at the beginning of the install and change your partitions (change from 100% of the hard disk for C drive to 50% of the hard disk each for C and D, for example).

If you are running an earlier operating system then you can use the start up disk to boot from and use that to reformat. If you want to change the partition allocation using that method then use the fdisk programme to delete all the partitions and then recreate the primary partition and then any others you want. Once you have your partitions then use format x:/s where x is the first partition and format y: where y is the second partitions (and third and fourth if you have created them). Then reinstall the operating system onto the hard disk.

You will need a boot disk which you can get from http://www.bootdisk.com/ . Pick the appropriate one, then make sure you have a blank floppy disk before you click on it.

Leave the boot disk in your drive, then reboot. You will boot into DOS. After a few minutes, the drive stops spinning and you have a A prompt (A:\). Now type 'format c:' without the quotes.

Sit back and wait, could take a little while. After its done, answer the questions and take out the disk. Your drive is now formatted.

If you have 2 drives you can simply reformat a 2nd drive as if it was a floppy disc (right click - format drive) but if you are running XP and only have the 1 drive, you'll need the XP disc to format the drive ....... run from disc (you'll need to change the boot order, have your XP disk in the CD-drive during boot-up and then just follow the on-screen instructions.

if you want to format from the windows than right click the drive and select format..

if you want to completely format the harddisk insert some bootable media having command prompt or dos..and then format each hard disk partition..

if you want to delete the partition as well and create them from scratch use fdisk command in dos.

Go to explorer, right click on the drive and pick format.

WARNING, if you pick your main hard drive c: and format that, then your PC will be totally empty, i.e. not work at all.
