Actually, in some ways I think it is easier. Yes, landing jobs and such is more and more about social skills, or having a social network. But with the internet has come a way for people who aren't "social" to still stay in touch, keep up with the news, etc. This is true whether you mean "shy" people, or you mean people who just don't care about social interaction. Either way, all these technological advances have made it possible to be a recluse, and yet still reach out to the world whenever desired, without having to leave home.

All people are different. Some solve problems such as the form in which they insert themselves into reality can be and is as different as the amount of people on this planet. A more sensible approach is to realize that all are individual social beings and all are socially active sometimes more and sometimes less. There is no human being that is not a social activity of some sort. Some people decide that to be less socially active in some particular way and know that can be hard if the dominant social activity excludes any behavior that is not totally compliant. Like trying to be vegetarian where no other person even understands such a thing. Or worse, if you are using "socially castigated" people as an example, of course it can be hard for those who have chosen to take that path. And then you might not have liked some particular item on the plate and were made victim for your sociability. I don't think it is so hard to understand why. Try being unsocial. Bring hardness down on yourself and then delve into the "whys" behind the difference and understanding is sure to come.

I think it had always been difficult. There still are sit down coffee houses, book stores to meet others. Go to a place everyday and soon one meets other people.
I am not a social butterfly either. I like it. Also feel there is nothing wrong with staying at home and not going where all the lights and noise is at. One can be alone and not lonely. One can also be in a crowed of people and be very lonely....

It has never been really easy, but you have to be sensitive to what the other person is like. If you find someone who is glad to have a friend, you are lucky. It is even better if you can share a lot of similar interests. But that has never been easy to find.
