I think it's important to study both, but ultimately more important what it means to you. Studying the work from the author's point of view can bring new insights to the work, which, in turn, can lead to new insights of your own.

It really depends on why you are reading the book.
If its for a class, or a course in literature, then its more important to know what the author was trying to say, what the authors motives were for his writing.
If its for your self that you are reading, then why study the book at all? If you like it, and you see a meaning in it...then thats what its all about. Reading is a personal choice, and each book can mean something different to each person who reads it.

Great question.....It is all in YOUR interpretation.......one can never know entirely what the author was thinking or feeling ath the time
