I live in New York, but I'm going to be in California with the family for one month, right in the middle of winter. I do not have a garage, so my Honda Civic is going to be outside. No one will be available to drive the car during the time I'm gone. What's the best way to keep my car in good condition during this time?

Last year, in addition to getting a full tank of gas, I put some sort of liquid in my fuel tank, in order to prevent the water in there from freezing, I think. Is this good? If so, what brand should I use? Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks SO much!

Remove the battery and keep it in the house. That will do nothing for the battery but will help prevent both it and the car from being stolen. Last year you probably put some gas line anti-freeze into the tank. This year it is not needed due to the present gas mixture. Before you start the car when you come back check the oil & radiator to make sure both are full, reattach the battery and it should start right up. sitting a month will do no harm.

The fuel additive you are referring to is HEET. Comes in yellow bottle. Just leave it and hope for the best. When you get back, you should try to wait for a reasonably warm day (40's) to start the car up, as it will have more problems the colder it is.

Should be okay, though. Good luck.

A Honda should be ok sitting for only a month! All I would reccomend doing is locking it! The battery may give you a slower crank when you go to start it for the first time- but it should be ok!

If you have ethynol enriched gas near you (not E-85) fill
your tank and go on vacation. You need nothing else for
only a month.

Make sure that you have a good mixture of anti-freeze, and not just water in your radiator. Otherwise it'll leave a nice design on your engine block.
