First check to make sure they are hallmarked. If you are in the U.S.A. they would come in 10 karat and 14 karat. 10 karat is the cheaper of the two. If you are in Europe or the U.K. they use 9 karat and 18 karat as the norm. The same thing goes, the lesser karat is cheaper. Either karat is still good. The higher the karat the softer the gold is, as it has less other alloys added. Hoops can be delicate so you may be better off choosing a lower karat as it is harder and less likely to bend. It's all good!

well 14kt on sale that also for 167 seems expensive than its worth. I believe when you buy something gold, i prefer to buy a 22kt. Its not only pure but its an asset, i know my money spent on it won't be wasted atleast. 24kt you will never find, as its very soft. 18kt is not bad either but anything less than 18 kt is just not worth it. As you said you really don't care about the price go for 22kt. you can tell if its 22kt when you see a stamp stating 22kt which all the jewellery have, if it doesnt try to get a warranty card from the place you have bought it from just to make sure what you have bought is worth while.

just be sure that both are 14kt gold (because thats best for sensative ears) and make sure to ask if the posts are gold as well, sometimes they will make the hoop out of gold, but the posts out of a cheaper metal, which can give you an irritation on your ears. Also.. as far as I know, Macys doesnt offer any care or maintinance on their jewelry.. but most jewelers will clean your jewelry for life if you purchase it from them.. which is a nice perk. Have fun shopping!

You want to make sure the gold has a brilliant polished shine. If it doesn't have that gleam of really yellow-gold, it may not be the best quality of gold. Lots of other ways to see if its good, is to give it a little scratch. If its cheap and maybe fake gold, it might scratch and some paint will chip off. If its a good quality gold, it wont be affected by the scratching.

If they say 14K italian gold on them then they should be the same quality. Italian gold is the best by gold standards of jewelry making. If they are not stamped with italian gold or have it on the tag, and the sales clerk cannot tell you, I would pass it up.No scratching the jewelry. If you scratch the gold earrings, they will be damaged, and they may not have another pair. It is best to look for the 14K identifying mark.
