Australia are competing in next year's Asian Federations Cup (Soccer). How does that work? Can countries simply leave their actual continents and play in another one? And will this change Australia's FIFA World Cup Qualifying process??

Australia used to be a member of the Oceania section but now is a member of the Asian Football Federation. Geographically they may be part of Asia however Australia is still in a different continent and has been playing against Oceanic sides up till now. Why the change now??

Although of course Australia is NOT part of the Asian continent geographically, the Aussie FA applied to leave the Oceania confederation and join the Asian confederation last year on the grounds of improving the standard of competiton. It was felt that years of mainly playing and dominating New Zealand and some tiny Pacific island nations was not improving the standard of the Australian national team.

The move was met with agreement from the Oceania confederation, beacause Australia's departure now allows their smaller countries a better chance of qualifying for the World Cup.

From now on, Australia will participate in the Asian nations cup, and the Asian groups for World Cup qualification.

Additional info:
Australia proposed to join Asian Football Confederation because they want to avoid meeting any South American countries. The winner of the OFC Football World Cup Qualifiers were allowed to compete in a two-legged home-and-away playoff with the team ranked fifth in the South American qualifying competition for a place in the World Cup. And most of the time Australia lost and cannot qualify for the World Cup except the last WC.
