Read comment in Yahoo! answers that installing antivirus programs can leave residual processes in your registry that can cause system instability down-the-road. Do online scanners fall into this category?

First off, it depends what antivirus that you are using. Things like norton are in my opinion worse than not having an antivirus at all. But to answer your question, online scanners use small parts of your registry, simply to store your preferences. They wont hurt your computer or slow it down.
