Prune away, but be careful... the fewer the branches you have on your tree, the more likely you are to make out with your cousin!

Real Ones are nice but you have to worry about water, and the needles shedding, and they are usually expensive. Plus, you have to wait to get one or it will be dead by Christmas. The good things about fake ones is you pay an expensive price only once and you can use it year after year. Also the fake trees can come with the lights already on them. I hope this helps!
