In order to determine if students on a college campus are in favor of a tuition hike to pay for expanded parking services, a member of the student senate surveys 25 people in a commuter parking lot. Why is this a poor sampling technique.

It is a poor sampling technique because the survey is conducted in only one area (commuters parking lot) and the commuters may not have the same opinion as other students. Also, a sampling of only 25 people isn't enought to reflect the entire college student body.

well, it may not be representative of all the people who use the parking lots (residents were not asked). 25 people sounds like a small n. if it was over the course of like fifteen minutes, it was not representative of persons using that parking lot (as opposed to over the day or week at different times). in other words, it wasn't a random sample of those using the parking lots. since we're talking about a student-wide tuition hike, they should ask everyone. pool names out of the entire student body

1. It's not a random sampling - he's polled only those people most likely to benefit.

2. 25 people is likely a very small percentage of the campus and not sufficient to draw any real conclusion.

Your sample isn't a Random Sample of the total student population.

Someone who walks or bikes to school may not wish to pay extra for this.

The people in the commuter car park probably aren't students.

they are only sampling a certain type of student that the price increase would affect...a student that would most likely support the tuition hike. to be objective, you need to talk to all types of students (non commuter, and commuter) professors, staff, maintenance, frequent visitors, etc.)

Because it is only surveying those who already park there. They need to hear from people who would park there if they could, those people who don't park there now.
