make sure to clean your drives and defragment every few weeks. you can do this by START -> All Programs -> Accessories->System Tools -> 'disk cleanup'/'defrag...'
This is like changing the oil in your car, regular maintenance. As far as hardware, RAM and processor speed are going to affect what you call speed the most. If you dont have at least 512MB of RAM then you probably will experience slow periods with a few applications open at a time. If your RAM is low then just upgrade, it's easy. Nowadays, you're going to want to have a pentium4 at least. AMD is good. Don't go with Celeron unless you have too. You can try uninstalling programs that you dont use. Make sure you dont have any viruses or spyware on your computer.

Do the following maintenance cleaning and if the problem persists, go to add/remove programs on your control panel and remove the programs that you do not need; but be very careful of what you remove. Also, you should see if you need more Memery (RAM).
Note:
Before doing any of the maintenance steps outlined below make sure that your system is free from viruses and/or of any other undesirable Internet bugs, by running a thorough security scan of your machine. After you are through with it, go to Microsoft updates or Windows updates and download any and all available updates for both office and windows.
Now, you are ready for the following:
HOW TO DO A THOROUGH CLEAN UP (Windows XP)
While you are connected to the Internet do the following:
1. Click on tools ... Internet options. There you will see three buttons next to each other... “Delete Cookies” ... “Delete Files” and “Settings.” Also, below the settings button you will see another one “Clear history.”
2. Click on “settings” - go to “Edit” - Click on “select all” - Go to files, click delete and wait till all Internet trash files are gone.
3. Go back and click on “delete cookies” and wait till all cookies are gone
4. Go back and click on “Delete files,” put a check mark on the little white square shown on the small window that will open, click OK and wait for a little.
5. Go back and click on “Clear history”, click “yes” and you are done.
6. Now do a check disk and a defrag, then restart your computer and see if the problem is resolved. It is assumed that you know how to do that.
7. If the above steps don’t do the job, here is a little program that keeps your machine in shape and free from crashes:
Get on the web and go to http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/site; download the free trial program, familiarize your self with it and use it to clean up your registry automatically along with a sort of other helpful and useful maintenance chores. It is an excellent little program and does wonders with PC maintenance tasks and I strongly recommend it! It works on the background on its own automatically.
Here is how to clean website addresses from you browser bar:
While you are connected to Internet, go to “Tools” … “Internet Options,” “Content” tab … “Auto Complete button” … click on “clear forms” and you are finished.
Hope this helps!

Try these my friend :
1) you should install anti-virus and update it then scan your all drives
here is some ideas :
Norton Antivirus:
http://www.gold-software.com/download4567.html
McAfee Antivirus:
http://www.click-now.net/download/mcafee_virusscan.htm
Kaspersky Antivirus:
http://www.gold-software.com/download2453.html
Panda Antivirus:
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Anti-Virus_Utilities/Panda_Antivirus_Platinum.html
2)Bad sectors:
1- Right click on your all drive > properties > tools tab > check now > check both of option ( automatically fix ... & Scan ...)
> start
2- you can get a new Hard disk drive (HDD) and install Windows on it . maybe your old HDD has some bad sectors that couldn't repair .
3)Maybe some files had losten:
1- Restore your PC
or
2- Install a new Windows XP

One of the most common reasons for slow-downs is too many programs running in the backround. Check your task bar lower right. Close any programs displayed there that you don't need running at all times.

Gnerally speaking your computer will slow down when your cache memory is full or when your hard drive is fragmented. Make sure you shut down after using your computer and run disk defragmenter to defrag your hard drive.
The cheapest way to increase speed is to increase RAM.
